About

  • All members are welcome to get involved and can nominate themselves to join the committee. If you’re interested, just let the Secretary know - new faces and ideas are always welcome.

The Society holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM) each December, giving us a chance to look back on the year that was and share plans for the year ahead. We’re always on the lookout for new committee members, with opportunities coming up at the AGM and occasionally throughout the year. If you’re keen to get involved, just have a chat with one of our friendly committee members.

A big part of what the committee does each month is keep an eye on new film releases and choose the films we screen. We often select films that have been recognised or awarded at international film festivals. If a film is likely to screen commercially we usually give it a miss - which means our program often offers members the only chance to see these films locally.

Dubbo Film Society has been operating since 1989, and we love sharing great films with people who are curious about cinema beyond the usual box-office blockbusters. At Dubbo Film Society, we screen quality films from Australia and around the world in a proper cinema setting - but with a relaxed, social vibe that turns each screening into a shared afternoon out.

We call ourselves a “society” because it’s about more than just watching a film. It’s about enjoying cinema together, chatting between screenings, and being part of a community that loves discovering something a little different.

We carefully select a mix of recent releases and timeless classics from around the world. Each film afternoon presents two full-length movies - one in English and ordinarily one in a foreign language with subtitles - allowing you to experience diverse cultures in a single visit. Each year, we also host a one-day film festive, where time permitting, members can settle in for four or five films in one big, immersive celebration of cinema.

We’re mindful of making our screenings welcoming and accessible to our members. Wherever available, films are presented with closed captions, so everyone can comfortably enjoy the experience.

Our program spans a wide range of genres, from powerful dramas and clever comedies to the occasional documentary, ensuring every season offers something fresh, surprising and worth talking about.

Curious about what we’ve screened before?

You can explore films from the past year or two on our archive page, or dive deeper with Two Decades of Film, our 2009 publication celebrating the Society’s programming history since 1989 - proof that we’ve been serious about great cinema for a long time.

Dubbo Film Society is a member of the Australian Film Societies Federation and registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

  • If you are an RSL Club member, please bring your membership card and show it to reception on arrival.

If you live within 5km of the Club and are not a member, you must be signed in by a Dubbo RSL Club member or join as a Club member on the day. Please speak to a DFS Committee member if you need to be signed in as they are all Members of the Club.

If you are not a member of the RSL Club, you will be asked to sign in to the Club on the day, and ID will be required.

  • Members are welcome to enjoy lunch at the Dubbo RSL Club Bistro before the film - a great way to settle in ahead of the screening.

After the films, you might like to head into Sporties Bar for a relaxed drink and chat, or stay on for dinner at the Sunset Bistro. If you’re after something casual, pizza is also available.

Plenty of options to round out your movie day.

Dubbo RSL Club Theatrette
178 Brisbane Street
Dubbo

All screenings take place in the air-conditioned comfort of the Dubbo RSL Club Theatrette - a purpose-built theatre that feels like cinema used to.

Think proper seating, a big screen and that classic movie-going atmosphere that’s all about settling in and letting the film take you somewhere else.

Double feature film screenings commence at 1:30pm and complimentary tea, coffee and light refreshments are served during intermission.

Drinks can be purchased at the RSL Club Bar and taken into the Theatrette. You’re also very welcome to bring your own snacks if you think you might get peckish during the film - and if you don’t finish your refreshments at intermission, you’re more than welcome to take those back in with you
